Two out of two: the Walter Hayes Trophy
07.11.2004 by AltoSport
If the King of Kents had been fraught and close, the Walter Hayes Trophy meeting was anything but. With eighty seven cars entered, including all the regional champions, all the previous Walter Hayes champions, F3 star Danny Watts, former Touring Car star David Leslie, and Le Mans driver Neil Cunningham, you could be forgiven for thinking that this would be a close and bruising meeting.
Joey however had other ideas, sailing through the heats, semi final, and final with the greatest of ease at the Silverstone National circuit. Never putting a wheel wrong he simply drove away from everyone and won the final by a startling 20s, putting in fastest laps in all three rounds. By winning for the second year running Joey created a new record.
He was proud to again be presented with the Walter Hayes Trophy (a replica, the original stays in the British Racing Drivers Club) plus trophies for his heat and semi final victories, and fastest lap award, by Sir Jackie Stewart, who was full of praise for his dominant performance. "This is a fantastic meeting, James Beckett does a brilliant job, and I'm coming back next year to make it three in a row:~ if I can borrow another car!" said Joey.
Future plan
Joey is to test again for Performance Racing in their newly acquired F3 car with the Mugen-Honda engine, and will soon reveal plans for some invitation racing before Christmas. He will also be undertaking initial testing for the new Spirit Formula Ford car, built by Steve Wills, his engineer for the 2003 Festival
