May 11th 2008: Post Spa LMES
I hadn't been to Spa for seven years and arriving there with the WF01 to drive was always going to be exciting. The last car I had driven around the famous track was a Don Hardman run Ray Formula Ford. Of which I remember our visit was cut short after a terminal engine problem. However, it wasn't long before I was back into the swing of it during the practice sessions on Friday. What a corner Eau Rouge still is. The approach is quick and it is flat out driving our Embassy Racing machine, but did take three laps to build up to that though.
I had a new team mate for the weekend in Tom Kimber-Smith. I knew Tom from our 2003 Formula Ford days but we had never worked together on the same team. We had always been competing against each other but it was quickly clear we were going to have no problems working together and with the team to get the best out of the car.
Qualified proved this as I managed a good lap and out the car 6th in class. We both felt confident of a solid race performance and knew we could chase for a podium. It wasn't meant to be though as on the warm-up lap I was assaulted by Casper Elgaard's Team Essex Porsche. It was clear straight away that our race was over. I was devastated for the team after their hours and hours of work. Once again we are left looking forward to the next race to chase that podium.
Talking of the next race it will be the Lemans 24hrs over the weekend of the 14th and 15th of June. For me it will be an incredible experience as it's my first time there and one I have dreamed of since I first knew about the race when I was a kid. I will be partnering Warren Hughes and Jonny Kane and I am extremely grateful to Jonathan France for this opportunity.
Thanks again for everyone's support. Hope to see you all at a race sometime soon.
